YWCA Clark County is a tax-exempt non-profit organization, under the section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and therefore all charitable donations are deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Donor Levels$10,000 + Esther Short (1802 - 1862), businesswoman/founder Helped build the city of Vancouver. Donated to the city the land that is now Esther Short Park and a strip of land along the waterfront. Operated a hotel, a restaurant, and dealt in real estate. Known as "The Pioneer Mother." $5,000-9,999 Ilchee "Moon Woman" (early 1800s), businesswoman Native American daughter of Chinook chief. Became one of the most successful traders on the Columbia. Ran an operation of five canoes. Became known as "she who rows her own canoe." Thought to be a shaman with magical powers. $2,500-4,999 Mother Joseph (1823 - 1902), nun/charity worker Vancouver's most famous woman. Established hospitals, schools, orphanages, homes for the aged, shelters for the mentally ill and Indian schools. Offered help to all who needed it. Said, "Sisters, whatever concerns the poor is always our affair." $1,000-2,499 Sarah Winnemucca (1844 - 1891), activist Lectured and wrote extensively on the treatment of Indians by the federal government. Dedicated to improving the conditions of her people. Teacher for the children of the Bannock Indian prisoners interned at the Vancouver Barracks. $500-999 Louisa Wright (1862 - 1913), doctor First doctor in Clark Co. to have both a degree in medicine and a license to practice. Advanced the status of women by her skilled and selfless application of the medical art. $250-499 Ella Wintler (1885 - 1975), teacher/politician Represented Clark Co. with 10 two-year terms in the state House of Representatives. Retired teacher who fought for schools and children. Brought a host of amenities to the Schools for the Deaf and the Blind and gained benefits for DD kids, as well as for other Vancouver schools. $100-249 Eva Santee (1907 - 1979), librarian/teacher Began her career as a school teacher and in 1932 became head of the Camas Library and led the drive to construct a Camas Library building. In 1940 she was appointed Vancouver Public Librarian and was the leading force behind the merger of Vancouver Public Library and Clark County Libraries to form the library district that saw completion in 1950. $1-99 Gretchen Fraser (1919 - 1994), Olympic skier Won the first ever American Olympic gold medal in alpine skiing. Worked with disabled and wounded war veterans. Worked in the Special Olympics. Mentored young female skiers. |
