benefit luncheonA standing ovation and $140,110Victoria Rowell, our Benefit Luncheon keynote speaker, told the story of her childhood in foster care and the women who mothered, taught and mentored her. She spoke to a rapt audience at our 15th Annual Benefit Luncheon on October 9. Victoria Rowell received a standing ovation after finishing her speech with an excerpt from her memoir, The Women Who Raised Me, about her foster mother Agatha Armstead, who cared for Victoria and her sisters despite several debilitating physical ailments. The audience responded by donating generously and helping us raise a total of $140,110, which includes cash donations, ticket sales, book sales and sponsorships. We were able to match donations two to one due to a $60,000 cash match given by the following generous donors: Jan & Steve Oliva ($25,000), Candace Young ($5,000), Joyce & Charles Carter ($2,500), Jean & Glenn Waller ($2,500), Beaches Restaurant ($2,000) and several anonymous gifts. We also appreciate our generous sponsors: Ray Hickey Foundation (speaker sponsor), Realvest Corporation (presenting sponsor), Columbia Credit Union (platinum sponsor), The Columbian (corporate partner) and First Independent and the Cowlitz Tribe (patron tables). Funds raised at the Benefit Luncheon support all of our YWCA programs, including CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and ILS (Independent Living Skills), both of which help children and youth in foster care. We want to thank everyone who participated in the Benefit Luncheon and helped us raise funds to transform children’s lives.
