young women of achievement - mission and significance

Mission

The mission of the Young Women of Achievement Awards is to recognize a select group of 12th grade women from area high schools for their outstanding community service and leadership in the areas of social issues, interracial communications, and world peace.

The YWCA started the award in 1987, a time when students typically were recognized for their academic and sports achievements. The YWCA wanted to honor students for positive community involvement.

Today, the YWCA continues to honor girls that go above and beyond school volunteer requirements to impact racial justice, world peace, and the empowerment of others, all of which are part of the YWCA mission.

Significance

The Young Women of Achievement Award is important because:

  • It publicly recognizes the positive community involvement and volunteer work of young women in Clark County.
  • It acknowledges, encourages and supports future leaders.
  • It promotes positive youth role models.
  • It brings focus to the positive things in which youth are involved.
